Skype for Windows 4.0 Goes Gold; Improved UI, Audio and Video Performance

Over the past eight months 1.2 million Skype users have participated in the Skype for Windows 4.0 beta program (stage 1, stage 2, stage 3). During this beta period, not only current user feedback was sought but also feedback from new users installing Skype for the first time. The goal was to provide a user interface that was more intuitive while encouraging users to go beyond simply voice calls to experience and use chat and video conversations. Today Skype is announcing the Gold release of Skype 4.0 for Windows. From the download page:
We've built this brand new Skype so you can have the conversations that make a difference to you, every day. It's easy to use, plus step-by-step guides help you get started.
While most of the new features have been revealed during the beta period, Skype's marketing will focus on three key features:
  • New user interface; with over 25% of Skype-to-Skype calls involving video this new release has been designed with a focus on improving the video call user experience.
  • Improved call quality: Skype 4.0 for Windows incorporates Skype's new SILK codec whose features are discussed in a separate post today. Bottom line is a crisp, crystal clear audio experience, yet only half the network bandwidth of other codecs is required to support a voice call.
  • Bandwidth management: a new bandwidth manager has been developed with the goal of improving overall call performance by adapting, in real time, to degraded or low speed network conditions, such as those caused by excessive packet loss and/or jitter.
The new user interface also has taken into account factors that encourage users to explore Skype beyond voice calling. Incorporating beta user feedback Skype has found that the new UI is driving up adoption rates for Instant Messaging, file transfer and video. When you open a contact window launching a voice, chat or video conversation requires a single click on the respective voice ("Call"), chat or video button. The associated text pane tracks not only chat messages but also voice and video call detail information (launch time, end time) as well as file transfer information. And, as in the past with chat, the entire record is all archived on your local PC for future recall.

Other features: You can choose to view your Skype activity in one larger window or in individual "conversation" windows. During a call a drop down menu on the "call audio control bar" provides quick access to making any necessary audio or video settings. Single click buttons allow you to quickly change or add conversation modes to adapt to the context of the conversation. A wizard provides assistance with testing audio and video settings. During their testing they found that these features drove new users to more quickly experience chat and video while there was an increase in usage of these modes by legacy users.

On-the-fly the bandwidth manager can adjust both video and audio transmission by making real time adjustments to parameters such as video resolution, frames-per-second or audio bandwidth. to ensure an ability to maintain a basic level of communication while enduring these conditions. When combined with SILK's reduced network bandwidth requirements, the overall goal is to improve the overall user experience with minimum or no user intervention required.

Two changes;

  • The SkypeMe! status button has been removed as a result of its tendency to be used for spamming and other forms of unwanted calls. (Of course you also still have the option to only allow callers in your Contact list to call you.). Along with this Skype has introduced "abuse reporting" which is monitored by Skype personnel for dealing with undesirable calling activity.
  • While you can still participate in Public Chat sessions launched or joined from Skype 3.8, there is still no ability to launch or join a Public Chat from Skype 4.0 for Windows. This is my primary complaint about the new user interface. We have had a Skype 4.x Public Chat discussion ongoing since May, 2007; it has provided an interesting dialogue amongst Skype users and Skype personnel, including some feedback on features in Skype 4.0. And it has supported many other informal "water fountain" conversations amongst special interest communities of Skype users. Skype for Windows Product Manager Mike Bartlett claimed yesterday, during an interview, that Skype was reviewing how to embark on "public conversations" in today's messaging world where services such as Twitter and Friend Feed also provide ongoing dialogues. However, Skype Public Chat has its own "space" in terms of user community; it needs to be brought back as soon as possible.
Over the next few weeks, with more experience using Skype 4.0 for Windows we may cover some features in more detail. In the meantime you can download it here. We look forward your feedback in the Comments.

Yesterday Skype went past 16 million concurrent users around 1830 GMT. It will be interesting to monitor both the concurrent user number and Hudson Barton's "real user" indicator as Skype 4.0 for Windows installations grow over the next couple of weeks..

Of course, the best news is that Skype-to-Skype calls (including multi-party calls), chat and video calling remain free. And there are calling plan subscriptions available for low cost calling to landlines worldwide.

From the Release Notes:

  • feature: New style when copying and pasting text in an instant message (text quoting)
  • featue: Video Call in separate window
  • improvement: Skype now creates thumbnails of display pictures
  • change: Get more ringtones and custom sounds link removed from options panel
  • change: Removed display bandwidth usage option
  • change: Dial pad will be opened automatically on call to landlines or mobiles
  • change: Increased minimum window size in compact mode

Skype 4 is missing many important features that were previously present in version 3.8:

- Accessibility (keyboard nav & screen readers) - This is supposedly "coming soon"
- Call transfer
- Auto redial
- Sending contacts
- Send Money
- Skypecasts
- Partner alerts (eBay, Paypal, 411)
- Speed dial
- SkypeMe Mode
- Birthday reminders

I don't understand why the Skype 4 product has been allowed to go live with such a restricted feature set. Skype Beta testers told the company many times about these missing features but the issues haven't been resolved...

Skype 4 is the worst interface of all versions of Skype.
My recommendation is keep 3.8, go to Skype forum and complain about the total mess-up. Maybe they will wake up and abandon version 4 and add the new codex's to it.

Installed Skype 4 and lost the ability to use my Logitech video camera. The camera is there, still works with the Logitech applications, but not with Skype. Will be looking to see if I can go back to version 3.

Hi. as for me I like the new skype..but I like to see some of the featues that the developers missed.

1. Add tabs to the conversation window. It's 100 times better to have all your conversations in one windows then in 20.

2. Add the file transfer progress bar on the bottom of the conversations window with more info about the file transfer then just the time remaining.

3. Too much space for the user info on the conversation window...we all know who are we talking to. We don't need to see that all the time.

4. Too much white (unusable) space in the conversation window. When I maximize a chat window 50% goes to the actual chat (in the middle) 25% white space on the left and 25% white space on the right. Why do I need the white space on the sides? Remove it please. I want full chat space from side to side.

5. I like the video integration inside the chat window, but again to much white space on the sides.

It's interesting that someone "anonymous" seems to have missed out on the beta program. 1.2 million did not. However, each to his own.

As for "anonymous" who had a video camera problem, I just went and checked one more time. My Logitech 9000 is working fine in Skype 4.0. (using Logitech's 11.8 webcam driver; there was an upgrade from 10.5 recently).

As a general comment I have spent a lot of time looking at individual features over the weekend and come to appreciate what a good job has been done. Now if they could restore Public Chats, I would be totally happy.

I miss shared groups and I can't figure out why sending contacts was removed. It should be very easy to implement and there is no reason not to. At least none I can think of.
I'm really considering to move back to 3.8 from this crippled Skype 4.0.

Call transfer is a must. With it missing, I'll probably have to revert back to 3.8.

Maybe Skype 4.0 are not really for tech savvy type of people.

Say.. is there such thing as an open source voice chat program?

Change the system to show contact status clearly again:
Online
Away
Not Available
Offline with Call Forwarding
Offline with Voicemail

I undocked the chat windows from the main window, so the Taskbar shows the Contact's name...have that show the status again also.

Extend the colors of the first line of chat across the window again. All lines of chat run together in the current form.

Give the option to change the colors of the name/messages from both participants in a chat.

Custom sounds for individual contacts.

The incoming message sound only plays when Skype is not the active application. I have been busy working on a project and did not know I had received a response in chat, because Skype was the focused application and no sound was made to announce a new message. I must make Skype a background application to get the notice.

This needs some serious work. The Mac version does this a lot better.

I cannot figure out how to see full profiles. If the information is more than one short line it is not all displayed. You can copy and paste it, but I simply cannot get it to display any other way.

I also agree that the inability to send contacts is a serious loss.

Finally my Skype DUALphone will not work with 4.0.0.206, but a much cheaper USB phone seems to work OK. I bought the DUALphone from Skype and feel cheated by this.

I forgot a further issue. I have my contacts sorted to show those online first, but when others come online they do not move up on the display, and since I have lots of contacts, I don't see them. If I sort by name and then again by online status they move up on the list, but they should appear there automatically as they did with earlier versions.

I spoke too soon, after a bit of a search I found that an updated driver ver. 2.39 for the Skype DUALphone works with Skype 4.0 - problem solved. Sorry abut the previous posting.

But I still cannot see full profiles or send contacts!

Here is an interesting bug, I don't know whether it is new to Skype 4 but I will investigate. If I make a video call to a Pocket PC the call goes through but the video doesn't and Skype crashes. Video calls to regular PCs seem fine.

Oh, how I wish I'd read the comments here before I downloaded the 4.0 upgrade. Sorry, but I like dividers between my IMs, and the IM post time takes up so much space that the actual conversation seems so narrow unless I make the window much wider. And I have to scroll all the way down my Contacts list to find those who might be offline but who have call forwarding. And scrolling up and down a current IM session is quite flaky. And the buttons "Call" and "Video Call" are so big...I wish I could find a 3.8 installer so I could go back.

G'day all.
I have saved almost every installer since 1.3
Here is a link for 3.8 on one of the servers I run.
http://www.sisbiz.com.au/skype-installers/
I have read the legalities & think I am allowed to distribute it, however if there is anyone in here that knows legal jargon, perhaps they might check & advise.
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/legal/promote/distribute/
I will remove from server if requested to do so by Skype or advised otherwise.

BTW, did you know you can run multiple instances of Skype by creating a new user account on your computer & then creating this shortcut -

%windir%\system32\runas.exe "/username:NEW USER ACCOUNT NAME" "/password:NEW USER ACCOUNT PASSWORD" "C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe"

Unfortunately it still requires you to type password in the command line interface to start Skype. Haven't found a workaround. YET :-)
I use one for my business contacts & one for personal.

Cheers
Tony

Our company has been using skype since 2004, and we all absolutely love it. Until 4.0 came around . . .I installed the Beta version, fought with trying to handle the new interface for 2 weeks, and went running and screaming back to 3.8. The user interface is not as friendly (dummy proof?) and trying to handle all of my IM's in 1 window was one unholy mess. I also couldn't seem to be able to find chat history for group chats. So far out of our 40 + users, only 1 staff member has stuck with the new 4.0 version, and complains bitterly on a daily basis :(

This User Interface is terrible. Even on compact mode. The colour scheme for the chat window is terrible. It is way too light and it is hard to distinguish between your chat and the other persons. In the old version, you could see the solid grey and blue lines separating the chats. And please!!! get rid of that gigantic "Call" and "Video Call" butons in the chat window. A lot of people use Skype just to IM. I think Skype has gone overboard with 'focusing on Video Call improvements'.

I am disappointed they got rid of SkypeMe rather than fix it. I've met a lot of interesting people on SkypeMe despite the onslaught of sex ads. Why not implement the reporting mechanism and keep SkypeMe? Or better yet, close every single account that has an account name with leading spaces and non alphanumeric characters.

Why haven't an Invisible List been implemented yet?

This new version essentially seems like a downgraded version of MSN now. Why should we use it?

Where the hell is chat at for people in my contact list..There is only SMS which has charges..
Skype is a very sneaky nickel & dime company..

Detest the new skype. The lack of public chat support is a huge downer for me. I have absolutely no use for the skype 'phone' functions. The only reason I even installed it was to join a couple public chat groups that I am a member of.

We're seriously considering dropping skype altogether and just moving back to IRC.

Everyone is right about how they messed up the UI. But even more important for me is that they broke the dialing system. Previously I typed a number, hit enter and the call started. Now I have to go to another window.
sometimes clicking on the green key dials the number, other times I have to type the number again. Probably this change is what also broke dialing from my USB phone with skypemate.

I guess I have to go back to 3.8

Im not an old fart but the contact list font is smaller than ever.
To install this on my parents/family computers would be cruel.

How hard is it to add a select font size option for the contact list? Or is it some design queen who doenst like larger fonts messing up her work?

How about next time they try to make it 2pt font instead, right before they make it invisible?

The first thing you do when you want to make something more functional is NOT make it almost invisible.

I lasted 20 minutes with Skype 4.0. Mostly I like the Contact Status indicators being clearer and seeing if a contact had their webcam attached made a big difference in whether I contacted them or not. With friends and family all over the world, this was a favorite feature of 3.8 which I am now back to.

I tried to live with this new ugly UI for 2 days, but I had to go back to 3.8 after I tried to find a message by date in message history - skype 4 shows only time.

It would be a sample of how good software can turn into the worst.

While I like some of the new layout/features in 4.0 ... the fact that so many important features like birthday reminders, send contacts etc have been dropped is absolutely disastrous. And what makes even less sense - these are features that encourage users to share their contacts, make contact with friends & family and encourage the skype user community to grow - absolute lunacy!

Skype 4.0 is just horrible; believe me, when an interface is so bad that I feel the urge to waste my time commenting about it, it's bad...

At May 11, 2009 8:33 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Advances since 3.8:

In 3.8 -- "Last seen online" when point to a user -- handy, feature gone in 4.0. WHY?

Broken filter -- type in the filter box. In 3.8 you always had a user in focus, arrows up & down would move you to another user by filter. In 4.0 you see the selection, but there is no focus.

CTRL+TAB is a standard way of switching through tabs. If Conversations has become a tab, why not let a user switch between tabs? ALT+1 ALT+2 ALT+3 is good, but it is not standard UI.

UI for file transfer is not good either. When will Skype let a user to grant trust to certain contacts to send files without confirmation? No flame about threats of viruses -- the files all destinate one specific folder, it cannot harm the system, but can ease life. No problem if this feature if off for dummies, allow only administrators to turn it on if you really care about security.

Good Lord, this interface is awful! First Yahoo screwed up their messenger, now Skype. What is going on? You guys found a pool of 14 year old engineering managers somewhere? 6 point fonts in the interface that cannot be modified? Are you insane?

And why can't one have a normal listing in the chat window, with username: msg instead of this worthless expanse of white space everywhere? What is wrong with you people?

Posts going back to February complaining about 6 point font, and you still don't have a fix in 4.1 Beta? This is basic usability issue.

This does not bode well for the future of Skype. YIM is going down the drain having been taken over by dumb teenagers, now another one is opening a door for Google to come in and eat your lunch. Brilliant.

I've used Skype for years, gamely tried version 4, and after a week went back to 3.8. Version 4 quietly dropped auto-redial (Skype has yet to explain why), the interface is less functional, video connections with a normal webcam crash a lot. What is the deal here? 3.8 is much better. I used to trust Skype automatically, now I am starting to be skeptical.

At April 27, 2010 8:30 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

huh, I can't comment as my Skype ID...

Please guys, listen to the majority of comments on version 4. I know it must have been a lot of work, but PLEASE, for all of your users, roll back to 3.8, add the new codecs, and make minor changes from there, if any are needed at all. If anything, I'd reduce clutter from 3.8 - hiding the call and hang up buttons since they have no use in text chat and are visible when a call comes in anyway, and maybe giving the option to remove the history tab, making it possible to remove all tabs, leaving contacts as the only view.
Version 4 is the opposite of this, removing all useful features, bloating every aspect of even the compact interface with needless clutter and useless information, and even crippling hotkeys like Alt+S to send, just like you've been able to use on every other IM client since the mid 1990s... but not Skype 4.
Sorry - I tried 4 when it was new, and just tried it again for a couple weeks when I got Win7, but I'm ignoring the compatibility warnings and going back to 3.8 again. If it doesn't work, I just won't use Skype anymore, but I can not use version 4; it's an atrocity.
