Skype for iPhone puts another pretty face on IM+

Since Skype doesn't offer web access or clients for all platforms, there's a boutique industry filling gaps in Skype's product line. The IM+ line added an iPhone browser client with callback service.

SHAPE Services hosts a huge bank of Skype clients. Their IM+ for Skype web app, Skype for iPhone, talks to those Skype clients via the Skype API.

Conclusions:

Free for now, except for SkypeOut fees for inbound and outbound voice calls.

Underfeatured, lacking Skype 1.0 tools like group chats, file transfers, and end-to-end encryption.

Skype should have offered web chat/calling features and a set of web services available a year ago. So it is very nice of Shape to fill this gap while Skype catches up (and Skype is on this trajectory).

So, If I have a skypeout which I do in my subscription with Skype - this will be free? Or am I totally confused?

If you have SkypeOut (such as Unlimited Calling Plan in North America) and your call is to a PSTN number within North America, it is free. (Recall there are really two calls here placed through a Skype Conference Call setup: a SkypeOut call back to your own iPhone and a SkypeOut call to the destination PSTN number). However, you may still pay any wireless charges (AT&T, in the case of iPhone) to reach your home calling area for your iPhone.

So, just to make sure I'm understanding this: This doesn't let you do an actual Skype-to-Skype call entirely on the iPhone?

Here's my situation. I live in a basement apartment with zero AT&T reception. I get around that by giving people a GrandCentral number that rings to my SkypeIn number and my cell -- when I'm in my apartment, I just pick it up on Skype.

If I could have an actual Skype conversation over WiFi on the iPhone in my apartment, that'd be great. But I get the impression that doesn't work -- the call would still have to travel over the cell network. Right?

Not Good! I made a call to oversea it bound back to my ( call back number )
Good SoftWare, but i don't know why?
I holp (SHAPE Services) will find out what happen.

Thanks

You're right; the call still travels over the wireless network. It's a classic case of using a device client for IM but using the underlying wireless phone service for the voice component for both technology and cost reasons.

So, if I do a Skype-to-Skype call, is it free other than the minutes used on my AT&T plan for example? I have a friend in Japan using Skype. If I call her using Skype-to-Skype will it cost nothing more than using up minutes on my AT&T plan?

Can I use my iPhone to call my friend overseas mobile phone ? If so, will such call be charged to my iPhone mobile carrier (AT&T) ? or on my SKYPE credit ?

i am confused. Am i using my minutes with ATT when making a skype call-out. since my call back number is my mobile att phone # is att charging me to call my phone number (which would be free since i have att mobile-to-mobile) or is att charging me for the phone number i am actually trying to call (which would use up my att minutes)?

You will be using up any wireless carrier (such as AT&T) plan you have for "local" calls for the leg of the call back to your phone. The leg to the called party is free if you are calling a Skype contact or will be charged to whatever plan you have covering SkypeOut if calling another PSTN number.

i have switched off my voicemail on skype so that i can receive calls on my iphone (as per their guidelines online) BUT my iphone does not ring when there is an incoming call (it displays incoming call on the screen so i have to be looking at the screen otherwise i always miss the call. And of course with the voicemail switched off on the PC, i have no way to receive voicemails.

Is there a way around this?

I intend to purchase an iPhone in the U.S., and use it overseas (Ireland/England). Provided I enable it's use internationally, will I be able to disable "roaming" on the iPhone, access a Wi-Fi hotspot and use SkypeOut to ring a mobile phone in the U.S.? If so, can I expect to be charged by my service provider (AT&T) as well as SkypeOut? Thanks...

I live in UK, where iphone is sold with a 18 months contract with O2. I want to know what are the 'real' consequences of unlocking the iphone - would i be able to use the iphone and connect to wifi using other networks? Also, I heard skype or any other VOIP cannot be installed - how should I go around this?

Still confused. So basically, is it convenient or not?. I mean, you are paying twice for each minute (the cell phone company and skype) .... right?

this app allows for skype users to chat with other skype users via text chat. Both skype in or skype out requires the website calls you on your phoneline you specify. Basically this is not true skype or skype without the convience/features for a little more money(see: expensive phone contact list)
