Does anyone know if Skype still charges a connection fee for forwarded called even if you have a subscription. I ask because with their old subscription model they explicitly said that they did.

    3. Brough Turner on SIP -- The Promise, The Reality and The Potential (15 June 2008 @ 04:49 AM):

Wow Jim, thanks for the over-the-top complements.

Your closing point is key, Skype is using SIP where SIP is well suited, i.e. for voice telephony interconnections with specific partners (e.g. for SkypeIn and SkypeOut partners).

I can go a bit further and answer Jon Arnold's question (that you quoted), i.e. could Skype have been success if they had used SIP? The answer is no because they couldn't have used SIP for what they accomplished at that time. When Skype launched (in 2003), their biggest differentiation was their service "just worked." It automatically got around NATs and firewalls and did whatever was necessary, on a case-by-case basis, to make things work, including audio relay in the cloud. That wasn't possible with SIP in 2003. In 2003, STUN had just become an RFC, TURN was being discussed and the discussion which became ICE was just beginning. If anything, the existence of Skype (and the resulting Skype envy among some SIP advocates) spurred work on ICE.

It might be possible, in the near future, to what Skype did (in 2002-2003) using mostly SIP, ICE and other IETF protocols, but it wasn't possible in 2003.

    4. Solange Darcy on Skype's North American Headquarters (14 June 2008 @ 10:17 AM):

I started using Skype three years ago when it was still a small UK-based company; it was very efficient and user friendly. Now it is just another money-grabbing monster with NO available customer service. (emails are mostly useless)
Three months ago, I bought air time via PayPal. The latter charged my card but Skype never updated my account. Try as
I may, I could not get any contact with Skype and PayPal denied being able to do anything. An official complaint to the FTC got some attention and PayPal eventually refunded the amount but Skype has blacklisted my computer and I am unable to use my old account or open a new one, no matter what ID I use.
This turned out to be great favor. I joined Vonage and now I can call to Europe for free - totally FREE this time.
Skype/PayPal/Ebay can all go to blazes!

you should have seen the expression on faces of the nurses in the hospital when i started talking to my laptop over skype to have a voice and video chat with some of my contacts... letting them know where i was (since the skype sms's did not show my caller ID...)

the nurses literally took their thermometer to measure my temparature

"he is talking to his laptop now, he must be really sick". we must give him more morfine :)

    13. Greg Maletic on 3G iPhone misses continuity of connection (11 June 2008 @ 02:04 PM):

I think your third point--that notifications will kill foreground processes--is likely incorrect. Apple didn't say that the iPhone wouldn't support background processes...they said that 3rd parties can't create them. Apple can, and of course they already do, as we can see when a phone call comes in and you happen be to using a different app.

    14. GregM on 3G iPhone misses continuity of connection (11 June 2008 @ 02:01 PM):

You bring up valid points, but it seems to me those pale in comparison to the points that Apple raises: namely, the high likelihood that background processes will consume significant power and CPU cycles.

Would you mind at least addressing those concerns? Do you think they're valid?

    15. Tor on 3G iPhone misses continuity of connection (11 June 2008 @ 09:38 AM):

1: the iPhone is allready a walled garden, no?
2: I get sms and emails, even though the sms or email application is not in the foreground.

The situation will probably be the same with the official push notification service.

    16. Ben on 3G iPhone misses continuity of connection (10 June 2008 @ 01:29 PM):

There's one point, you haven't thought about: The Push Service is just a notification and does not include any personal data - so it just tells you, that your app is getting some new infos. So are still communicating via web / umts and not via Apple. And the point, that you have to close the current app is not true - you can do it when ever you want to. Its just a sms...

    17. J.A. Watson on 3G iPhone misses continuity of connection (10 June 2008 @ 11:54 AM):

Your point about Skype "sharing availability" would be a good one - except Skype consistently gets the availability wrong, and seems incapable of fixing it, so how exactly is that an advantage? Likewise, incoming/outgoing "friend requests" are only delivered when BOTH parties are online simultaneously, so when Skype is consistently wrong about the presence of one or both parties, the delivery of such requests can be delayed by days or weeks unnecessarily.

    18. Greg Spector on Whither Mobivox? (10 June 2008 @ 06:54 AM):

Greg from Rebtel, here. Just want you to know that Rebtel still offers free calling between 47 countries -- no strings attached, no restrictions on who or what type of phone you call in those countries. Yes - it requires you jump through a hoop or two, but it's totally free.

    19. Micah Singer on Will "Free" Remain a Key Feature of VoIP Services? (10 June 2008 @ 12:46 AM):

I really like the two points emphasized in this blog entry - 1. what is the meaning of 'free' voice and 2. why do we continue to see business plan churn in the voip sector.

When you are betting that voice will be free you are, in effect, betting that whatever voice is a loss-leader for will be profitable - essentially you are betting on a different business model. The plans I've seen try to compete are monthly subscription for a service (vmail etc.), advertising (web or audio) supported voice, and voice in a bundle like triple play. With VoIP the range of different service that can be bundled allows voice to be bundled with just about anything IT, business process and soon mobile. So, there are a lot of great ideas – maybe even some ‘killer’ ones - and a lot of less great ideas both types using voice as a loss leader. When one idea or business stumbles, generally, it is because the market didn't respond to the service as a stand-alone, poor execution, etc.

There is also a secondary market effect of all of these 'attempts' at VoIP - there will be failures, fear of instability etc. - it sounds a lot like the early Internet. The key is service providers understanding that 1. they need to find a business model that can grow with stability and profit and 2. they need a cost of goods and a return on investment that makes sense without tremendous scale (which comes later, but is a lot to ask for upfront).

Again, because of VoIP technology all of these things are possible. As we all begin to find cool VoIP features that we like on our phones at the office and/or Skype offers something we like but we need a more hands-on service provider, telecom operators should take note.

I’m still betting voice will be free one day and service providers will be profitable with their integrated communication offerings including VoIP but in getting there the idea of what it means to be a service provider will be re-defined.

    27. Ben Lilienthal on Skype Conference Calls - Now Supports up to 25 Participants (05 June 2008 @ 07:53 PM):

Actually, Skype is not moving into our market. They are moving into an adjacent market for consumer based conference calls.

The www.hidefconferencing.com service is differentiated from the Skype offering in a number of ways:
      1) It costs money
      2) You can use 800#'s and local #'s as well as Skype
      3) It can be scheduled
      4) It offers recording
      5) We have live support personnel available in case of problems.

We have found a niche that is close to what Skype offers but also distinct enough that we can maintain a differentiated and valuable service and generate significant revenues in doing so.

Great idea, terrible mic. This is fine for listening to music wirelessly, but if anyone is thinking of using this for work - i.e. conference calls and the like, forget it. You will be asked to speak up constantly. The microphone is just terrible. Simply unusable for Skype calls. I contacted the manufacturer, but no reply. No sign of an updated version with a working Mic.

Hi Jim.... Hudson here. I just want to point out that there are two different types of Skypecast; public and private. The test yesterday was of the private variety. Its existence was NOT posted on Skype's website.

Public skypecasts have, in my view, become completely spammed out with pornography and cheap language learning sessions that are probably just forums for stalkers.

The private skypecast function permits you to set up a scheduled time and get a link for posting to web or chat or email. Assuming that the link is debugged at some point so that logging into a skypecast is trouble-free, and subject to the limitations of no PSTN and

So, Skype decides to stab another of their software "partners" in the back, by moving into their market. No amount of dancing and fancy footwork on your part is going to make it into anything else.

If Skype would invest their effort in doing something that isn't already available, like multi-party video, perhaps everyone would benefit - most of all, Skype users.

    42. jp on Questions Raised by Q1 Numbers (20 May 2008 @ 06:15 PM):

I have been paying for skype for two years now and have know about skype since it first emeraged as a technology. I don't use it. Basically because it's unreliable and voice quality is unpredictable. From what I have found out is inherent in most VOIP applications without both high upload and high download speed and is reliable. Which many isp's in Colorado only have high speed download. I do use Qwest as my DSL provider. I also know that comcast sells its own VOIP service here for 33$/month above the Internet bill. I'm assuming there cable modem based service offers Superior data rates. And also I'm guessing that no one would put up with the bad connection quality of skype paying 33$/month for comcast. In theory if I use there Internet service I will be rid of my skype problems.

      But I digress

The peer to peer info structure of skype also bothers me. Why should I allow skype to use my computer as a super-node. It bothers me that I have to change my fire wall settings to use skype--How safe is my computer using this product? Really?

Kaza the peer to peer program that skype was based on got hacked to the point that network traffic over the P2P network was overloaded by people who got around factors that controlled and streamlined the p2p networks traffic.

Now with skype all the free users bog down the p2p network for those who pay. But without computers ruining skype, bouncing call traffic around the Internet, how is skype going to support the paying customers? Now nearly every IM program (ie google talk) allow over the internet calls. Why won't the free users just use google talk?

Skype is now selling hand held skype devices. These devices i would guess are not acting as a node in the network-- thus supporting it. If everyone starts using the handset devices what will be left of the network?

I agree skype needs to go main stream and be as a phone company rather than a computer service. Get away from the desktop. But it needs to get up to modern standards. If they need to charge me a bit more I would do it. They need some technical solutions that involve fixing the inherent problems with P2P--Or just possibly bi-pass it at some level.

I keep Skype as a "just in case " service. I pay 150$/month for cell phone service because I need good service (sound/reception) with unlimited minutes in my line of work. I know of many people like myself that have tried skype and no longer use it. I would love a chance to stick it to my phone company and just use skype.

I would love to get skype to work like a real phone service or even a limited cell phone service. The promise of skype is grand. It just doesn't deliver.

    52. Andrew on What's Next In IP Communications? Not This Play (14 May 2008 @ 05:49 AM):

The only way Telco's would have a chance at replicating a Skype-like service and be able to work together would be to fund a 'start-up' that operates independently of all of them and give that startup unfettered access to there collective networks. I agree with you Jim, the chances of this happening are slim to none (personally it would be a lot of fun to try and I would jump at the chance)

If someone wants to beat Skype, they have to be better than Skype. No one has come close yet, despite 5 years of trying (ooVoo is pretty good, Gizmo, Sightspeed not too bad - but they lack the attention to detail and User experience that Skype has)

Is Skype vulnerable? Absolutely, they have set the bar quite high with what is expected but have really dropped the ball in 2 key areas. Business and enhanced services - they have been so completely focussed on 'making HD and cheap calls' they have let there Voicemail service to pasture, it is unchanged since it launched, they have tinkered in the business market with less than 'pretty' results, and it is probably there biggest growth area.

Non-Telco thinking built Skype, I am not sure Telco thinking can replicate it. There is a happy medium somewhere, but who is willing to write the funding cheque and take the chance?

What a sad and ridiculous farce. The "Nomad" had better hope that she doesn't need assistance from Skype "support" along the way, or else she will spend at least four days walking in a circle waiting for a response (which will likely be "reinstall Skype"). It would be much wiser for Skype to invest in improving their product and support than on such a ruse. Hmm. Perhaps they could hire the "Nomad" to work in customer support? With four days response time she could reach pretty much anywhere in the world.

    61. Costas Kariolis on Skype Revamps and Extends Unlimited Calling Subscription Plans (07 May 2008 @ 04:44 AM):

The introduction of these new call plans from Skype should prove beneficial for the internet telephony / VoIP sector generally. Anything that helps to bring internet telephone calling further into the mainstream is very welcome.

May we mention that there are other options in the market that allow you to make unlimited calls for a flat rate such as Vonage. There are some significant differences between the services that Vonage and Skype provide that should be taken into consideration by anyone looking to make internet calls.

Firstly, call quality is a major advantage of using Vonage, our call quality is comparable with a regular landline service. Secondly, with Skype you have traditionally needed 1) your PC to be switched on to be able to make and receive calls, with Vonage you have never been reliant on your PC being switched on and 2) a headset or USB phone to be able to make internet phone calls, with Vonage you just plug in your existing home phone. Using your existing touch tone phone gives users the freedom to make unlimited calls in the way you want while you walk around your home or office.

You can find out more about Vonage at www.vonage.co.uk.

      Mr. Wichura,

Thank you for your comment. The Boingo connection manager is indeed an excellent connection manager. The JiWire Hotspot Finder for Skype was developed with 3 key goals in mind; one of which is to provide an alternative to the user's Windows connection manager and the ability to easily switch between surrounding available access points.

The product was intended as a 'swiss army knife' for mashing up many APIs to bring a single interface of managing and searching location based information within the context of Wi-Fi while coupling that layer of functionality into a natural language BOT through the Skype API.

      Thanks again for the comment,

      Nihad

    64. Alex Kazim on Much Ado About Nothing.... (06 May 2008 @ 11:03 AM):

I'm of course biased, but totally agree with your assessment. Even if they could actually get 10 telcos (all with their own corporate agendas) to team up on a single platform, they're chasing a moving target. Their only hope for success is to violate Net Neutrality and bias their network for their product. Which of course, the government would stop. Ok, maybe not ;-)

Just one data point, but my startup is all Skype: from the DECT phones on everyone's desks to the $2,000 video conference system we put together (Mac Mini, Canon mini-DV camera, Panasonic 40" rear-screen projection bought off Craigslist). The only POTS line I have is for the burglar alarm and one day I'll be able to get rid of that one too...

    65. John Renolds on Is Telmex blocking Skype, Vonage users in Mexico? (04 May 2008 @ 12:36 AM):

I live in Guaymas, Mexico. For at least the last year both Telmex and Megacable (which uses Telmex's facilities) suffer from frequent (like every few minutes) loss of DNS contact, rendering the Internet unavailable unless you enter the ip address directly. They don't cache! They don't care! For $4.80/day salary would YOU care? For at least the last FOUR YEARS their cellphone services (Telcel and Movistar) as well as their landine service (Telmex) have been suffering from the almost daily inability to be reachable from the United States for several hours--or even days-because of problems at the Mexico inward telephone gateway (which is owned by the Mexican government).

No, they aren't blocking Skype (they block port 25 though), it's just that upload speeds are limited to 64K in order to conserve bandwidth that's being eaten-up by rampant music file sharing. 64K is right at the edge, and any degradation in quality will quickly eat into the meager upload bandwidth available for Skype.

I've been living in Mexico for six years, and believe me it isn't lazyness. It's simply that most Mexican workers are paid under five dollars a day.

    66. a1gjv on Skype CEO Josh Silverman -- Thoughts After the First Four Weeks. (03 May 2008 @ 10:47 AM):

I have just read the interview with Josh Silverman the new Skype CEO and what a sham interview it was. Talk about bias, bias is not the word.

Tell me how can you get the answers to questions that MUST and NEED to be answered when it is so stage managed. What is the matter with you Josh are you to frightened to come out and face the REAL world and the REAL problems that are happening at Skype this very moment.

This interview cannot be call a proper interview when the person asking the questions is none other than Skype's very own publicity department therefore they are not going to ask him the most IMPORTANT things like when are we going to get a customer service that works or HQ Video that works for everybody no matter what platform or web camera they use, if companies like ooVoo and SightSpeed can di it why can't Skype do it, because I think they have got themselves into such a deep deep hole with this there is not a ladder long enough to reach down to them to pull them out.

Josh we don't want bells and whistles at the moment we want a system and Customer Service that works but at the moment everything is going backwards not forwards. From the comments in your staged interview it would seem you are being miss guided and only told the thinks that people what you to know, like we are developing Skype to integrated with this gismo or that gismo etc.

Yes I know we have to have development and I am all for it but, this development must be done on a stable working platform which at the moment Skype does not have. Josh it would seem that you either do not listen to what your customers say or if you do you choose the pretend to be deaf because is was suggested here what need to be done first and not a thing has been put right.

Is everyone done patting each other on the back now? Could you please tell us all what this has to do with SKYPE - perhaps give an example, just ONE, of a time when Skype listened to their users, or bloggers, or User Forums, and took some action? Let's see, was it when the "forgotten" piece of code left in the program was found, but Skype spent months saying it was "by design", and denying it was a bug? Or when the recent security problems were found, and Skype tried to "pooh-pooh" them with statements about they were only possible in certain very rare situations? No, neither of those fit the bill. But there must be at least one example, isn't there? Or perhaps not...

First I want to say thank you to the author for this blog. While any bone-head can throw in a CD and install a camera, when this bonehead (me) did it the Mic function would not work with Skype, just the video. I found this and followed the instructions step by step and it works now. So thank you.

Second thing... regarding people complaining about having to use a logitech camera for high quality video. Stop complaining, Skype is free for internet-internet calls and a lot of development has had to go into the video portion of it. Do you think these guys are working for free? Logitech obviously paid Skype to do this and it is a perfectly logical and reasonable business decision.

Instead of complaining, buy some stock in skype (whatever company owns it... is it publicly traded?) and start thanking them for their smart business decisions.

The incredibly successful 700 mhz auction, and the open-device requirements it brings, appears to have triggered an open network movement all across the wireless marketplace. I don't think that openness is a genie that the cable companies and major Telecoms can put back in the bottle even if they wanted to. The Carterphone petition seems frivolous under such circumstances, and it is not therefore surprising that eBay's reaction to Martin's dismissal of the petition was so extremely mild.

I don't know what 21st centu telco should do; but a 20th century telco will not have this problem because it will interconnect only with approved carriers and at approved interconnect points.

On second thought, there are no 21st century telco; there are only 20th century telcos and direct end-to-end communication.

    116. mj on What VoIP on Mobile Can Learn from SS7 (01 April 2008 @ 08:16 AM):

Phew - Finally. I can't resist commenting on this. The pressure for Voip-over-any-channel , even though the channel itself is fundamentally flawed shows the flaw in various startup projects - including a couple by Skype. Just remember that even the 3G protocol was designed to have a voice channel, and a data channel. The voice to carry real time voice, and the data to carry data with variable, and at times latency and contention. Voice over data was never a design consideration.

So, when we use the right tool for the right task, then probably we can avoiding wasting time solving non-problems , and spend time enhancing the mobile phone with the benefits that IP-connected applications can bring.

All we need is the operators, manufacturers and the regulators to understand that the consumer is best served by openness. But that is another discussion altogether.

You are dreaming if you think Skype is going to do anything remotely resembling what you have suggested. First, and foremost, THEY DON'T CARE WHAT THEIR CUSTOMERS ARE SUBJECTED TO. Period. They don't care. Second, doing so would require that they create something resembling a "Customer Service" department to handle such reports, and they have made it perfectly clear that they are not willing to invest the resources necessary for that, either monetary or human. Third, stopping this activity would require Skype to deny or cut off SkypeIn numbers, which would cost them money, and that is the ONLY thing they are interested in, bringing in money, in any way they can, from anyone one they can, no questions asked. That is why Skype is becoming a haven for pornographers, which Skype refuses to do anything about, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that they are being joined by con artists and scammers.

FT, Vodafone, BT where there. I think another carrier also but it slips my mind. Anyhow - I don't see it as mandatory to have carriers. The bar is set around innovation. If they are innovating they would be there. So again - the metric is one of innovation - this is the bar to be crossed to be invited to speak. I'd like to see more carriers there simply because they hold big purse strings, but if they don't have innovation or innovation enablers or new ways to reduce barriers to innovation there is no reason to have them. And just maybe - asking for carriers is like asking for the water supply company to show you it's latest innovations with what you can do with water - kettles and washing machines and such. But if there are carriers out there who feel they are leading innovation, reducing barriers to innovate etc. then get in touch about 2009 Lee(at)eCommMedia(.)com

    146. Samuel Grandjean on Security, Skype and the Blackberry (14 March 2008 @ 08:08 AM):

I just installed Skype IM+skypeOUT on my blackberry 8830 world version. It does work but what I pay for connection fee (7.8cents) and 4.5cents per minute (to Switzerland) is a whole lot more than what I can get with NobelCom. I received an offer from them yesterday to purchase a calling card to Switzerland for 2.5cents/minute, (the highest rate of their 4 cards) without any connection fee at all. Skype is supposed to be 2.1euro cent per minute to Europe and most other countries with no connection fee. If you possess a cell phone with free internet access, you should NOT have to pay more than you pay on your computer to call any phone around the world. As long as they have not found an answer to that connection fee and higher fee using a cell phone through the web, I will not use skype at all but will continue using my calling card. It is faster and cheaper. NobelCom provides a local number for me to call and recognizes my tel# so I never have to dial a pin. I just find the memorized person in my address list, click send twice and talk. That is that simple. The charge on their card lasts 1 year and they offer auto recharging capability as well.

      Thanks for reading my message

The record feature is superb, and well-done. What a joy to be able to do interviews over the phone, and record so easily. For $39, it's a steal! Frankly I don't know why this phone isn't offered on the Skype website?

    180. tom on Are bad times good for Skype? (01 March 2008 @ 11:46 AM):

bad economic times will indeed be good for skype. but for one reason only(the reason skype is popular to begin with). that reason is the side by side pricing against alternatives. consumer VOIP has always been and continues to be about price and nothing else. it is the $3/month skype pro and $2/month for a DID that is the attraction. if skype wants to see a serious explosion in bussiness they will work to see an abundance of cheap standalone skype phones that act as near as possible to POTS telephones.

    185. J.A. Watson on Jaxtr blows Stuart Henshall's privacy. Ouch. (27 February 2008 @ 12:35 PM):

In his rant, Stuart says "guess what? no button to delete or cancel the account. This is common practice in other places". Guess what, Stuart? No button (or any other mechanism) in Skype to delete or cancel an account. As a founder of Skype Journal, one would think he would know this. Those who live in glass houses... Ah, but the standards are different for Skype here in the Skype Cheerleading Journal, aren't they?

    186. Øyvind Mo on eComm's Creative Destruction Tripled (26 February 2008 @ 07:27 AM):

I for one have got a small but tasty bite of the pie. Back in the mid nineties I spent many hours and much of my disposable income in a public phone booth, calling from Norway to Mexico. The cheapest method cost a couple of dollars a minute, using obscure call-back cards. Nowadays, using Skype, it's ridiculously cheap to keep in touch (even with video) and a whole lot warmer ;)

    188. Anthony on SkypeOut Quality & Billing Problems (24 February 2008 @ 06:27 PM):

So here we are in 2008, tried Skype at last and thought it was the coolest thing in the world, bought two skype phones, got extended family on skype... I've found it no better than Yahoo chat. IMPOSSIBLE to buy credits, my attempted purchases are constantly rejected for a myriad of ridiculous reasons. On both skype-to-skype and skype-out calls, quality is marginal after 10 seconds of "hello? can you hear me? I can hear you, can you hear me? hello? Hello?" WORST is they NEVER reply to customer service emails. Very dissapointing. Tsk, Tsk.

    191. max on Buy pre-paid Skype cards and gear at Wal-Mart (21 February 2008 @ 12:39 PM):

Yes I went to find skype cards at my local walmart, and they were nowhere to be found, and the employees seem to be illiterate as to what they were. There were plenty of other cards from other US companies, but none from skype. I guess there is motive behind that, since skpe is a non US company, and also Verizon heavily controls the local phone company service. I am sure there is effort on thier part to make skpe cards hard to find and buy, since skype takes away from their business.

I intend to purchase an iPhone in the U.S., and use it overseas (Ireland/England). Provided I enable it's use internationally, will I be able to disable "roaming" on the iPhone, access a Wi-Fi hotspot and use SkypeOut to ring a mobile phone in the U.S.? If so, can I expect to be charged by my service provider (AT&T) as well as SkypeOut? Thanks...

Thanks for the kind words Jim. In truth, Sheryl and I have spent quite a bit of time pondering our questions and thoughts about how her view and mine echo similar ideas about the future. We're working on the first episode of our upcoming GeekSpeakTV. I think our first episode my well be spent talking about that subject.

Wish we could make it to eComm. We were both really planning on it. Unfortunately, we just have too much on our plate and we were forced to make the hard choice to miss it. I think our questions aren't central to the them of the conference, but are important ones that aren't being thought about by all the people who should really be considering them too.

Hope you had a great weekend!
